I really was a great speller back in the day. Now i'm just horrible with words. I'm always having to look up words in the dictionary it drives me nuts. Here are some great rules I learned.example: Add -es to the singular form when it ends in s, ss, ch, sh, x, z, or zz:
bus, buses, kiss, kisses, church, churches, bush, bushes, ax, axes, waltz, waltzes, fizz, fizzes.
